(Luxembourg) – The European Stability Mechanism (ESM) has appointed Matjaž Sušec to the position of Head of Policy Strategy and Institutional Relations.
Prior to his appointment, Mr Sušec was Deputy Head of the Policy Strategy division. He led a number of policy projects related to ESM’s crisis resolution role, including the design of new stability support instruments. He represented the institution in European Union committees, such as the Task Force for Coordinated Action (TFCA), which ultimately contributed to the agreement in principle on the enhanced ESM mandate. Mr Sušec, who is a Slovenian national, was also mission chief for the ESM’s post-programme surveillance activities in Portugal, and was responsible for managing relationships with the credit rating agencies.
Before joining the ESM in 2013, Mr Sušec worked on monetary policy and investment issues in the field of risk management for the European Central Bank and the Bank of Slovenia. He holds a Master of Science degree in Economics from the University of Essex and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Ljubljana.
“The appointment of Matjaž Sušec as Head of the Policy Strategy and Institutional Relations division reflects the great skills and outstanding job he has done since joining the ESM. He has demonstrated leadership and the capacity to conclude complex assignments requiring cross-institutional collaboration, including most recently the Pandemic Crisis Support credit line,” said ESM Managing Director Klaus Regling.
